Songs I’m ashamed to like, but like nonetheless

July 14, 2010

We all have guilty pleasures — don’t pretend like you don’t! Okay, I don’t want to get defensive before I’ve even started this blog.

So, I am human. Duh. Therefore, I am flawed. I like to think I’m a person who listens to good music — yet I know that I, too, have guilty pleasure songs that I listen to not because I think they’re good, but just because, well, because the songs are SO. DAMNED. CATCHY.

You know those songs that you play with the volume turned reeeeal low so no one can hear? They’re the songs you immediately turn off when someone walks into the room. They’re the ones that you deny liking vehemently if someone asks, “Hey, what do you think about the new Miley Cyrus song?” They’re the songs that make you question your sanity when you discover, “Shit, I like this.”

If you read this and judge me, go ahead, I don’t care. ‘Cause deep down, you know that you have that one Jonas Brothers song you can’t stop listening to. You know that somewhere in your heart is a little spot that is still reserved for N*SYNC, and you know you secretly wish every day that Justin Bieber was a little bit older so that it wouldn’t be so creepy for you to have all those fantasies about him. You know what I mean.

** For the record,  I hate the Biebs. Moving on … **

So, here it is. I hate myself for loving these, but I’m not going to deny who I am. God, help me.

1. Hey Juliet – LMNT

So what?? Yeah, you can look at them and their tight, leather pants and their high pitched, girly-sounding voices and say, “Hell no.” But, hear me out: it’s a … it’s … well … I guess I don’t really have an argument for their look. I just — I just like the song, okay? I like it a lot. I purchased it on iTunes. I hate myself.

2. I Got Nerve — Hannah Montana

This is probably one of the more painful admissions. But this is honesty-box time. I’m in a cyber confessional, and you guys are my pastor. I LIKE THIS SONG. I wanna jump around every time Hannah (Miley?) belts out in her adolescent twang, “I know where I stand, I know who I am, I would never run away when life gets bad.” It delivers a strong message! The guitar riff is punchy and fun! I like Led Zeppelin too! Okay, that was kind of off topic, but, like, I just wanted to make sure you all knew …

3. Year 3000 — The Jonas Brothers

I have no excuse for this one. I hate myself every time I listen to it and can’t turn it off. There is nothing to be said. I apologize.

4. Crawl — Chris Brown

Yes, Chris Brown is a wife- (girlfriend) beater. No, I shouldn’t still like him. Yes, I find him attractive. Yes, that is the reason I like this song. I am a female. I enjoy good looking men with fabulous bodies. Chris Brown is one of those men. Chris Brown sings music and dances in music videos. I watch those music videos. I enjoy watching those music videos. That enjoyment has a lot to do with my enjoyment of his music. I don’t approve of beating one’s mate. I do approve of hot men singing and dancing in a sexy manner. Do I get my point across?

Haha so true. Mine is You Belong with Me. Fuck you and your catchy music, Taylor Swift.

I love your honesty! But, for heaven’s sake! How could you leave out R. Kelly’s REAL TALK or, my personal guilty pleasure favorite, CLOSE TO YOU.

Well, the thing is, I don’t like Real Talk. I think it’s a terrible song. That’s why it’s not on the list … Do I think it’s hilarious? Yes. Do I think it’s good? NOOOOOO.
